SYO IN-HOUSE BASKETBALL RULES
2010 Boys 8-10 Year Old
Parents and fans should cheer all children on the court. Parents and fans shall not criticize the referees. Referees do not "play favorites" and will do the best they can. Anyone consistently criticizing or stepping on the court will be ejected from the gym.
The intention of the SYO Basketball program is to teach the fundamentals of basketball and good sportsmanship to the youth in our programs. If we keep these ideals in mind we will have a successful program. Good luck this season!
Roster: A player may play only for his assigned team.
Game Length: Two twenty minute halves.
Half Time: 3 minutes unless the officials decide to cut it short in order to get back on schedule.
Running Time: The clock will run continuously except during the last two minutes of the second half. The clock will stop during time-outs called by either the coach or the official and during free throws.
Time Outs: Each team is awarded one time-out per half.
Overtime Period(s): Overtime will only be played in the playoffs and championship games. Regular season games ending in a tie will be counted as a tie and 1 point in the standings. Overtime periods will be five-minutes stop timed. Each team will be awarded 1 time-out per overtime period.
Playing Time: All players MUST play an equal amount of time. This
includes playoff and championship games. Sportsmanship should be your guide, not winning! Substitutions will be every 5 minutes. The halves will be stopped every 5 minutes for substitutions. This means there are
8 segments to each game.
Therefore, if you have:
6 Players - each will play a minimum of 6 segments & a maximum of 7 segments
7 Players - each will play a minimum of 5 segments & a maximum of 6 segments
8 Players - will play 5 segments each
9 Players - each will play a minimum of 4 segments & a maximum of 5 segments
10 Players - will play 4 segments each
Free Throws: 8 & 9 year old's feet must touch the free throw line prior to shooting. 10 year olds will shoot from behind the regulation free throw line.
Three Point Shot: The three point shot is not in effect to discourage such attempts.
Defensive Restrictions: Defenders must stay below the 3 point arc. After 2 official warnings: 1 technical shot, 2 technical shots after every subsequent offense. No double or triple teaming or trapping above the free throw line extended to each sideline to the mid-court line at any time. Double or triple teaming is allowed from the free throw line extended down to the baseline at any time. There are no fast breaks. Once the ball is rebounded, the defensive team must retreat to their end of the court. You can only fast break off of a steal, not off a defensive rebound.
Full-Court Pressing: Full-court pressing is not allowed at any time. Defensive players must drop back to their backcourt whenever a rebound is controlled.
